595㎡(180PY)The boiler room of the Seoul National University Power Plant once supplied electricity and heating to the campus, but after losing its function, it remained an empty space. To bring new energy to this abandoned site, the Seoul National University Arts Center planned <Let’s Roll>, a temporary roller rink that operated for about ten days. Coloncolumn was responsible for translating this concept into a spatial experience.

This project focused on recreating the collective memory of 1980s roller rinks through visual and spatial elements. Vibrant neon lights, spinning mirror balls, the sound of rolling wheels, and the rhythmic motion of the rink combined to evoke a sense of familiarity despite having no direct physical reference. The ceiling was draped with emergency vinyl, which fluttered with the wind and reflected light, creating fleeting yet dazzling moments. This dynamic material not only redefined the space but also transformed it into a spectral memory of a roller rink, suspended in time.

The 30m x 12m structure was built using scaffolding (asiba), a material commonly found on construction sites. Designed like a stadium, its diagonal framework introduced a sense of rhythm and movement into the space, emphasizing the kinetic energy of the activities unfolding within. Above, five neon LED bars projected colored light onto the ceiling, casting reflections onto the vinyl drapery and filling the space with flowing illumination. In contrast, white LED bars installed beneath the diagonal rental and storage structure provided a grounding visual element, defining the operational core of the space.

Ultimately, this project revived the memory of a lost space, reinterpreting it through a contemporary lens where light, structure, and movement converged to create a temporary yet immersive experience.
서울대학교 파워플랜트 보일러룸은 한때 교내 전력과 난방을 공급하는 공간이었으나, 기능을 잃고 텅 빈 상태로 남아 있었다. 이 비워진 공간을 활용하여, 서울대학교 문화예술원은 약 열흘간 운영되는 임시 롤러장 <Let’s Roll>을 기획하였으며, 콜론컬럼은 이를 공간적으로 구현하였다.

이번 프로젝트는 1980년대 롤러장의 집단적 기억을 시각적, 공간적 요소로 재현하는 데 중점을 두었다. 형형색색의 네온 조명, 돌아가는 미러볼, 롤러바퀴 소리와 레일 등 익숙하면서도 실체 없는 기억의 요소들이 공간을 채운다. 천장을 뒤덮은 응급비닐 휘장 구조물은 바람에 흔들리며 빛을 반사하고, 그 반짝임은 찰나적이지만 강렬한 순간을 만들어낸다. 이는 유령처럼 떠도는 롤러장의 기억을 물리적 환경으로 구현하는 장치로 작동한다.

30m x 12m 크기의 장방형 공간에 구축된 아시바(가설 비계) 구조물은 단순한 기능적 틀을 넘어, 스타디움과 같은 사선형 형태를 통해 공간 속 율동감과 역동성을 강조하였다. 천장을 향해 빛을 쏘는 다섯 가지 색상의 네온 LED 바는 휘장 구조물에 반사되며 공간 전체에 빛의 흐름을 형성하고, 운영 공간의 중심이 되는 롤러 대여 및 물품보관소 아래 설치된 백색 LED 바는 시각적 안정감을 부여한다.

이번 프로젝트는 사라진 공간의 기억을 불러오고, 이를 현대적 감각으로 변주하는 과정에서, 빛과 구조, 움직임이 결합된 임시적이면서도 감각적인 공간을 구축하는 실험적인 접근이었다.
